I love the work of Carl Giles, simply known as “Giles”. He added topical visual fun to the Daily and Sunday Express from 1943 to ‘89-‘91. His annual collections were a regular Christmas present for my father. Though left leaning in politics he said he earned a good income from the right wing Express. As well as the contents of my weekly comic 2000ad, I also drew the scenes and characters in his strips.
Amsterdam Market find
– strolling along a rain drizzled Albert Cuypers Market I spied these ‘zines pinned up at a stall selling old publications. Michel Vallant stood out as something to post on the blog (sorry it’s taken so long!). The stories protagonist is a French racing car driver – however he looks to enjoy the adrenaline rush of two wheels too! It is still published (since 1950’s) and a distinguishing character trait of his is “dashing”.
T-Shirt Time
Picking up a bottle of pop I saw this chap wearing a Lucky Brand top. Emblazoned with the Lucky Vintage Motorcycle Works. I might try and pick one up to add to the wardrobe.
Nos Vulpes vulpes
Mr. Fox on a motorcycle with Ash, Kris, and Kylie speaking to a wolf off on a distant ridge.
Mr. Fox: Where did you come from? What are you doing here? [to the others] I don’t think he speaks English or Latin. [to the wolf] Pensez-vous que l’hiver sera rude? [to the others] I’m asking if he thinks we’re in for a hard winter. [to the wolf] I have a phobia of wolves.
Through all this, the wolf has not responded.
Mr. Fox: What a beautiful creature. [to the others] Wish him luck boys.
Mr Fox raises his paw. The wolf mirrors the gesture in solidarity.
Jump
Seen on a street in Britain. Starts with a family car, ends up as forty buses.
Chai
– nowt betta than a cuppa. My first drink of the day. Now sipped from a new mug from Dean. Champion!
Enter to Win
– fill out the form and drop it in to your local Triumph dealer. Cool pencil drawing .
Graphite Art
– Someone has an adept hand with the HB pencil when it comes to visual acuity in this sunlike recreation of a Speed Triple. Intricately detailed like one of the engineering illustrations of the fifties that were created in the large draughting rooms of the factories.
No Tail
– the lines of this legendary bike are well defined in another card from yesterday’s post subject.
Ink
– glass artist Amy Jean Nichols enjoys a sideline drawing art cards depicting classic motorcycles. Her studio is called Rigadoon Glass, after her adventurous travels aboard her R75/5 BWW sidecar rig. This Triumph Triple is one such card that looks the part for old fashioned communication.
Fobbed off
– an essential item for a single key or a collection of keys. Identity of use or group storage. They can be souvenirs, promotional, toys, trinkets.
China Set
– nice helmet in the classic chinoiserie blue and white motif as seen on English porcelain. Gorgeous painting.
Skin Graffiti
– Gorillaz bassist Murdoc Niccals gets up to no good street art in this body art scene.
Tiger Cub
– this is like the crazy half hour in our house at about 10.30pm. The two cats tear around the house chasing each other like crazy dervishes.
